This Might Be the Weirdest Foldable I’ve Ever Tested: Huawei Pura X Review

I review a lot of foldable phones, but every once in a while something lands on my desk that makes me pause. The Huawei Pura X is exactly that phone. I actually ran into this thing while I was in China and grabbed one on the spot, mostly out of curiosity. It is tiny, square, and honestly kind of adorable when you first pick it up.

This phone is tiny, not just small. But surprisingly, the outer screen works better than I expected.

Compact, Curious, and Handy

Most foldables these days feel fairly large in your pocket. The Pura X flips that idea on its head. It’s tiny but still very pleasant to use while closed.

When it is closed, the phone feels like a pocketable little slab with a perfectly square front screen. It is almost nostalgic.

It reminds me of those old compact digital cameras that everyone used to carry around.

The outside screen is not too small to use either. I could doom scroll on Douyin without feeling like I was staring at a smartwatch. It looks unusual, but the front display works surprisingly well for everyday stuff.

Specs That Matter

At around one thousand dollars, the Huawei Pur X is not cheap. But you are not being ripped off either. Huawei actually packed in some pretty solid hardware:

Here’s the Pura X in a nutshell, all the specs at a glance.
Category Huawei Pura X Specs
Display 6.3" inner OLED, 3.5" outer OLED, 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR Vivid – perfect for a tiny foldable phone
Processor & RAM High-performance chipset, 12 GB RAM (base) up to 16 GB RAM (Collector Edition) for smooth multitasking
Storage 256 GB / 512 GB (base), 512 GB / 1 TB (Collector Edition), no memory card slot
Rear Cameras 50 MP main, 40 MP ultra-wide, 8 MP telephoto, 1.5 MP color sensor, 4K video – solid camera performance for content creators
Battery & Charging 4720 mAh, 66 W wired, 40 W wireless, 7.5 W reverse wireless – excellent battery life for a compact foldable
Build & Durability Titanium alloy hinge, UTG glass, IPX8 water resistance, ~194 g – sturdy and premium design
OS & Extras HarmonyOS 5.0.1, NFC, USB-C, AI features, vivid display modes – all the smart features expected from Huawei

This is one of those devices where you can tell the company wanted to experiment but still keep the quality high enough that reviewers would take it seriously.

Camera Quality That Surprised Me

The cameras on the Pura X are better than expected for something this small. You can shoot stable footage, portraits come out sharp, and the color processing is very Huawei.

Since the device is tiny, you can still do the classic foldable camcorder thing. Hold it up, fold it halfway, and instantly it feels like you are filming a family vacation in 2004. Except now in 4K.

Then You Open It and Things Get Weird

Unfortunately, the fun starts to fade once you open it.

Once the phone is unfolded, everything feels off. It is heavy in a way that does not match the size. It is uncomfortable to hold for long periods. And I can already tell my pinky finger is going to file a complaint after a full day of using this.

The weight distribution feels strange. The form factor is hard to keep steady. And if you are hoping for tablet-level comfort, this is not the device for that. It is almost like the phone transforms from a cute square to an uncomfortable, unusual-shaped phone the moment you open it.

Comparison Table

Here’s a quick snapshot of what stood out to me and what didn’t. The Pura X is full of surprises, both good and a bit frustrating.
What I Liked What I Didn’t Like
The size is fun, quirky, and super unique Feels heavy when opened
Outer display is surprisingly usable for scrolling and apps Not ideal for extended use unfolded
Hinge feels sturdy and premium Inner screen ergonomics could be better for long sessions
Cameras perform better than expected Not ideal as a daily driver

Final Thoughts

The Huawei Pura X is the kind of phone you buy when you want something quirky, compact, and fun. I picked mine up while I was in China after randomly spotting it in a shop, and I’m glad I did. It is not trying to be the best foldable on the market. It is trying to be the strangest. And in that category, it absolutely wins.

And if you ever wanted to feel like you are texting from a tiny futuristic square biscuit, this is your chance.
