I Tore Down Apple’s Battery Pack and Found Something Surprising
I’ll be honest, I was never going to use this Apple battery pack. Since I don’t plan on using the iPhone Air, I figured I might as well tear it down and see what Apple put inside.
Getting it open wasn’t easy. The whole thing is sealed up tight, so I had to heat around the perimeter and carefully pry it up. It’s built like a tank and definitely not something Apple expects you to open or repair.
What’s Inside
Once inside, things got really interesting. iFixit actually pointed this out before, but I had to see it for myself. The battery in this pack looks strikingly familiar. It has the same steel casing and the same electrically activated adhesive strips that Apple now uses in their iPhones. But the real kicker?
It looks exactly like the battery inside the iPhone Air. That means Apple didn’t design a brand-new cell for this battery pack. They literally used the same part.
Why This Matters
Apple has a history of making proprietary components, so finding an iPhone Air battery tucked inside a MagSafe battery pack is pretty surprising. But it might also mean Apple is finally recycling parts between products, rather than manufacturing a completely unique battery for a one-off accessory.
This could help them cut costs, reduce waste, and simplify production. Plus, it’s a reminder that Apple’s ecosystem isn’t just about software, it’s about hardware efficiency too.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, this teardown shows that Apple’s MagSafe battery pack is more than just a fancy charging brick. It’s literally powered by the same battery that keeps the iPhone Air alive. It’s kind of cool to see Apple reusing parts instead of reinventing the wheel every time.
So yeah, I probably won’t be using this thing, but at least tearing it down gave me some insight into Apple’s design choices.
