I’m not going to do a bend test on the iPhone Duo.
Actually, I’m going to do a bend test.
I’ve reached the point in the teardown where I’m about to remove the inner display. I think there is a good chance I’ll break it during removal anyway, so I want to see how much pressure the phone can take first.
It Is Holding, but It Is Bending
I start gently, at what I call 10 percent of my force. Then I push harder, up to my estimate of 50 percent. The phone is holding up, but it is definitely bending.
Those percentages are just my estimates of how hard I’m pushing. I’m using my hands, with no force gauge, so they aren’t measurements of the phone’s strength.
That Is Enough for Me
I decide to go up to what I call 60 percent and leave it there. Why stop? Because I’m scared.
Somehow, when I check it afterward, the frame still looks straight. After watching it flex, that is a relief.
Final Thoughts
I stop before finding out what it would take to snap it. The frame looking straight doesn’t tell me that every part inside escaped damage, but I’ve pushed far enough for now.
Watching it bend leaves me with one prediction:
I think JerryRigEverything’s going to snap this thing in half.
That is where I leave the bend test. The inner display is next.
