This Looks Like An iPhone 17 Pro— It’s Not… But It’s Also Not Fake…
Most iPhone conversion kits are little more than cosmetic upgrades. They copy the look of Apple's latest phone, swap the housing, and call it a day. This one takes a very different approach.
Rather than stopping at the design, this conversion kit attempts to recreate much of what makes the iPhone 17 Pro Max feel new. It's an ambitious idea, but pulling it off would require far more than a simple housing swap.
So, could it actually deliver?
More Than Just a New Housing
The first surprise came before the phone was even opened.
The housing didn't feel like a typical aftermarket part. The finish was clean, the camera lenses and LiDAR sensor arrived protected with removable films, and the overall build quality felt much closer to an OEM housing than expected. Even the Apple logo was tucked beneath a protective layer, although its placement wasn't perfectly accurate.
The biggest difference, however, was what the kit was trying to achieve.
Rather than copying the appearance alone, it also included an Action Button, a Camera Control button, and a redesigned camera layout that closely matches Apple's latest flagship. Because the donor phone was an iPhone 14 Pro Max, it also kept the Dynamic Island, making the finished device look surprisingly convincing.
On paper, it sounded impressive. The real question was whether all of those changes could actually work once the phone was rebuilt.
The Conversion Was More Involved Than Expected
Making the phone look like an iPhone 17 Pro Max wasn't as simple as swapping a few parts.
Every major component from the iPhone 14 Pro Max had to be transferred into the new housing, including the display, battery, charging port, cameras, motherboard, speakers, and antennas. What looked like a simple housing swap quickly turned into a full teardown and rebuild.
Some parts fit exactly where they should, while others required extra work. Several speaker and microphone meshes weren't pre-installed in the housing, forcing them to be transferred manually. The relocated LiDAR sensor also relied on an extension cable included in the kit, but there were no instructions explaining how it should be routed or connected.
As the build progressed, a few fitment issues started to appear. Certain cables had less room than they did in the original housing, and some components didn't sit quite as cleanly as they did from the factory. Even so, by the time the motherboard, cameras, battery, and display were reinstalled, the finished device was beginning to look remarkably convincing.
The Good... And The Bad
Once everything was reassembled, the phone looked remarkably close to an iPhone 17 Pro Max.
More importantly, most of the original hardware still worked.
Wired charging
Wireless charging
All cameras
Bluetooth
Volume and power buttons
Camera shutter through the new Camera Control button
For a moment, it looked like the conversion had pulled it off. Then the testing uncovered a few problems.
The new Camera Control button only works as a physical shutter button, so it doesn't offer the touch-sensitive controls found on Apple's latest phones. The Action Button is also limited to the traditional Ring/Silent switch rather than supporting customizable shortcuts.
Testing also revealed two bigger problems. Neither the relocated LiDAR sensor nor NFC worked correctly after the conversion. On top of that, the phone still uses Lightning instead of USB-C because, underneath the new housing, it's still an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Water resistance is also unlikely to match Apple's original design after such an extensive modification.
Final Thoughts
This isn't a real iPhone 17 Pro Max, nor is it trying to be. What makes this conversion impressive isn't that it perfectly replicates Apple's latest flagship. It's how close it comes. From the build quality to the overall design, it's clear that far more thought went into this kit than a typical housing swap.
It's also a reminder that not every conversion kit is created equal. Plenty promise the same transformation, but very few deliver this level of fit, finish, and attention to detail.
