Why Am I Already Questioning the iPhone Duo?

I just got the iPhone Duo, and I already have a lot to say. Some of it is about using the phone. Some of it is about what I am about to do to it.

The intact iPhone Duo lying on the repair mat, centered with both rear sections and the cameras visible.

Obviously, I am going to tear it down and see whether I can make one side transparent. But before I get to that, I noticed something kind of cool.

Something Cool Before the Complaints

Two sets of pentalobe screws. That got my attention. I came here with a plan to open this phone, and it has already given me something to investigate.

A screwdriver pointing toward a screw position on one section of the phone.
The folded phone with its two bottom edges and screw positions visible.
The edge and hinge area of the partially folded iPhone Duo.

It is an interesting detail before the teardown. How the phone comes apart is still something I need to find out. But there is a difference between being curious about its insides and enjoying the first few minutes of using it.

The First Few Minutes Are Not Winning Me Over

The thing is, I don’t like this phone so far. The setup screen apparently looks like the iPad mini’s. Fair enough, that is worth pointing out. It still looks awkward to me on this phone, and that comparison does not change my first impression.

Then there are the volume buttons up top. That placement feels strange. The phone also felt scorching hot, so out came the temperature gun. Not exactly the list of things I wanted to notice first.

A handheld infrared thermometer aimed at the rear of the iPhone Duo during the initial check.

And Touch ID? I can’t go back. That is another part of this first impression that is not winning me over.

But I have barely used the phone. I cannot say too much yet. These are the things that stood out straight away, rather than a verdict after living with it.

Will It Still Work Afterwards?

There is still plenty to find out, and the teardown is next. I am going to open it up and see whether I can make that side transparent. That is the plan, anyway.

The thing is, this probably won’t be working when I am done with it. Or maybe it will.
