Why Removing the iPhone Duo’s Touch ID Was So Difficult

Touch ID is back on the iPhone Duo, built into the side button. During the teardown, I want to find out whether I can actually remove the assembly.

It is something I have been meaning to look at throughout the full iPhone Duo teardown. Getting the original button out turns out to be one of the more frustrating jobs.

Getting the Assembly Out

I eventually free the power-button and Touch ID assembly, but it is extremely difficult to remove. This is not one of those parts that has me smiling when it comes out.

I get there in the end, although I would not look forward to repeating it. Of all the components I remove, this little assembly gives me a headache.

Final Thoughts

The original Touch ID assembly does come out. Getting it out comfortably is another matter.

The original Touch ID assembly was removed. A replacement sensor and its fingerprint function remain untested.

I do not fit a different sensor in this teardown. What I can say from this attempt is that removing the original is possible, but it is far from straightforward.
