AirPods 5: What Does $20 More Get You?
Apple just made the cheaper AirPods a lot more interesting. AirPods 5 start at $129 with active noise cancellation included, keeping the open fit for people who would rather skip silicone ear tips.
Then Apple introduced a second pair for just $20 more. And the reason to upgrade is something you could use every time you put them in.
Noise Cancellation Is Now the Starting Point
Both models get a redesigned acoustic system and next-generation Adaptive EQ. Apple says these changes deliver richer, more detailed sound across different ear shapes, alongside more immersive personalized spatial audio.
The bigger claim is up to 50% more noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is Apple's comparison; listening tests will show how it holds up on a noisy commute.
Transparency mode is also designed to sound more natural when you need to hear people nearby. Adaptive Audio adjusts between transparency and noise cancellation as your surroundings change.
The $20 Difference Is in Your Fingers
The $149 model adds volume control directly on the stem. Swipe up or down to adjust your music without reaching for your phone or asking Siri. It is an everyday convenience that has finally made its way to Apple's open-fit AirPods.
It also gets a redesigned battery cell for an extra hour of listening with ANC, plus a case that charges wirelessly using an Apple Watch charger or a Qi charger. These are small conveniences individually. Together, they give that extra $20 a clear purpose.
| What changes? | $129 model | $149 model |
|---|---|---|
| Noise cancellation | Included | Included |
| Volume swipe | Not included | Swipe on the stem |
| Listening with ANC | Up to 4 hours | Up to 5 hours |
| Total with case, ANC on | Up to 20 hours | Up to 22 hours |
| Case charging | USB-C | USB-C, Apple Watch charger, or Qi |
Prices in U.S. dollars. Battery figures are Apple's estimates; actual listening time varies.
Leave Your Phone in Your Pocket
Both models support Live Translation and hands-free access to Siri AI through a compatible iPhone. Apple's demonstration showed Siri finding a restaurant recommendation from a personal conversation, then providing walking directions. Availability depends on compatible hardware, software, language, and region.
Apple also says AirPods 5 have improved resistance to dust, sweat, and water. That is welcome for something that spends its life moving between ears, pockets, and charging cases. For the repair world, the redesigned battery cell raises another question: how accessible is it when capacity eventually drops? A teardown will tell us more than a durability claim.
Which Pair Makes More Sense?
The cheaper pair still has a clear purpose: the same noise-cancellation upgrade without paying for conveniences you might not use. But if you constantly reach for your phone just to change the volume, Apple has made that extra $20 surprisingly easy to justify.
Both AirPods 5 models are available to preorder, with availability beginning September 18.
